GREEN BAY - With the countdown on for 2013, there are only a few days left to indulge in some things from 2012 you might want to leave behind.
“Wait until the New Year,” said Annette Swinton of Oshkosh. “The holidays have to be over with. All the good food.”
Swinton's resolution is to lose weight.
“Just not to be as lazy,” said Swinton.
“It gets crazy around the New Year,” said Marcia Sengstock, the member experience director for the downtown Green Bay YMCA. “Everybody wants to come in and change their lifestyle and become healthier.”
Sengstock says membership and usage will go up next week.
“Right now, we're kind of in the calm before the storm,” said Sengstock.
With people waiting to start on the resolution, unwanted habits could be in the process of being worn out.
“It’s common for before someone stops using or quits to use heavier, kind of the last hurray,” said Bill Labine, the executive director at the Jackie Nitschke Center in Green Bay, which helps people deal with addictions.
Labine says the more serious the resolution, the harder it will be to stay true to it.
“What I would suggest for breaking addiction, setting that goal, is to tell a lot of people about it,” said Labine. “The more you talk about it, the more likely you are going to attain it.”
Even the less serious goals could also use a peer push.
“At the Y we have wellness coaching that's included with your membership, so its that one-one-one interaction that you can have somebody guide you and help give you the right tips and the right tools to make it successful,” said Sengstock.
While the 1st is the popular time to get going, not everyone is waiting.
“I just want to get it done,” said Tim Oestreich of Oshkosh. “Getting to be 36 years old. Don't want health issues to come up.”
“I'm going to do it this time,” said Swinton.
