Truck troubles delay food pantry milk shipment

GREEN BAY - An effort to ship a truck load of milk from a closed Waukesha dairy to Northeast Wisconsin has been delayed.

Golden Guernsey gave Milwaukee's Hunger Task Force permission to retrieve about 50 truckloads of milk from inside the dairy's facility.

The plant shut down January 8 and the milk expires soon.

Food banks around the state are scrambling to arrange shipments to their pantries.

A semi truck filled with about 25 pallets was headed for Northeast Wisconsin Thursday morning.

But on the trip to Oconto, the semi's load shifted and the cargo was damaged.

The truck returned to the Milwaukee area and is scheduled to try again Friday.

Manna for Life Ministries in Green Bay was ready to pick up nine pallets of milk for its pantry. 

"The end result is that all the agencies that are able to take the product are going to get it, and it's going to bless a lot of people. There's many, many hurting people in the area, and anything we can possibly get to them, they're better off," said Jim Hogenson, Manna for Life president.

The Salvation Army of Brown County, as well as pantries in Oconto Falls and Shawano are also scheduled to receive milk.
