Upcoming Highway 41 and 29 changes

GREEN BAY - They say in Wisconsin, there are two seasons: winter and road construction.

For those who travel Highway 41 in the Green Bay area, the state advises more disruptions are still to come.

Tuesday, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation held information sessions for businesses and the public.

Crews say the next big phase of the project will be the Highway 41 and Highway 29 interchange.

FOX 11 spoke to drivers fueling up at a gas station near the current intersection on Shawano Avenue and Highway 41.

“I have to drive through 29 and onto 41 every day. It hasn't been too bad until they change it up a bit,” said Amanda Oninski, who lives in Oneida.

"It seems to coming along pretty well for it being winter,” said Devin Montevideo, also of Oneida.

Project managers for the U.S. Highway 41 construction project say despite the bad winter, crews working on the 29/41 interchange are on schedule.

"What you're seeing out there now are some foundations that have been placed and the columns, or piers. They are being constructed and what you'll see in the next few months is that being connected by the steel girders being lifted into place,” said Michael King, U.S. Highway 41 construction manager.

King says most of the current traffic patterns around highways 29 and 41 will stay as-is, as the construction takes place above the roads.

"We will have some night time closures of Highway 41. They're going to be at night. Later this year we will be working more up on the north end, by I-43 and Velp Avenue. There won't be too many closures,” said King.

King says the final touches on this interchange, seen in a video simulation from WisDOT, will be done in 2014.

Drivers who take this route each day say they're anxious to see the finished product.

“I think it'll be a bit easier, because it does get backed up quite a bit especially for Packer games or things that are going on,” said Oninski.

"It'll be interesting. It'll make us look like one of the big cities like Milwaukee and stuff like that,” said Montevideo.

After this interchange is completed, work will continue in the southern stretches of 41 of Brown County, near Ashwaubenon.

The DOT says the total U.S. 41 project will be done in 2017.
