UW-Green Bay soccer players suspects in assault

GREEN BAY - Two players on the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men's soccer team are under a criminal investigation. They've been accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a female student.

No charges have been filed yet, which is why FOX 11 is not naming either of the suspects.

Both men have been suspended from the soccer team and are also under investigation by the university.

"A lot of students may be wondering what is going on and they may feel they have their own questions that may be unanswered but that's why we're trying to move as quickly as possible but also to thoroughly investigate it," said Brenda Amenson-Hill, Dean of Students at UW-Green Bay.

The alleged victim came forward about a week ago. She told police she had been assaulted by two, maybe more, members of the men's soccer team.

She told police she couldn't remember all the details because she believed she was drugged.

According to court documents, she could remember going to an on-campus apartment in the early morning hours of October 10. She told police the two men poured her a drink and she later ended up having consensual sex with suspect number one.

At some point, she says, suspect number two forced his way on her without her consent. She told police, she started blacking out, but recalled seeing two other members of the soccer team in the bedroom watching.

The alleged victim told police she woke up about 12 hours later, with no recollection of how she got home. She says one drink should not have caused her to black out, since she has a high tolerance for alcohol. The alleged victim also went to an area hospital, where doctors found numerous bruises and scratches all over her body.

Investigators executed a search warrant at the on-campus apartment and removed a number of items, including several different pills and alcohol bottles.

"We are looking into what combinations of alcohol/drugs can have those kind of impacts," said UW-Green Bay Police Chief Randy Christopherson.

The UW-Green Bay Athletic Department declined FOX 11's request for an interview but did confirm suspects one and two were suspended from the soccer team on Friday.

The university is also conducting its own investigation.

All the men could face disciplinary action even if no charges are filed, according to Amenson-Hill. She said the university's investigation is primarily focused on the two suspects police are looking at.

"It would be safe to say they are being investigated more thoroughly but we haven't made a final decision," said Amenson-Hill.

Both investigations are expected to wrap up by the end of the week. Police won't say whether they plan to recommend charges.

"We're taking it very seriously," said Christopherson.
