Variables shape Lambeau rowdiness

BROWN COUNTY - When playing a rival team it can be a different kind of intensity on Lambeau Field. The Bar's Eric North says it’s the same story off of it for fans.

“It’s not called the black and blue division for no reason,” said North, a manager at The Bar on Holmgren Way. “They are here to play games and their fans take up the same kind of atmosphere.”

If police reports are a measure for fan rowdiness, it's a mixed bag when it comes to division games. A FOX 11 Fact Check found Sunday's Vikings game saw one more ejection than the season’s low of 16 against the Jaguars. The highest ejection total, 71, came in a Week 2 primetime game against the Bears. The Vikings and Jaguars games started at noon.

“We approach each game with an operational plan,” said Lt. Kevin Warych of the Green Bay Police Department. “We have the same mindset and that's to insure fan safety, to make sure everyone enjoys the game.”

Warych wouldn't say if staffing changes for division opponents. He says kickoff time, alcohol consumption, and the final score all play roles in how active police are on game days.

“And the most important thing is don't approach,” said Warych. “Do not get involved. Be a good witness and contact stadium security as soon as possible.”

Stadium View owner Jerry Watson told FOX 11 the most problems typically come from Vikings game crowds. However, the manager at The Bar sees it different.

“The Bears always seem to be the ones that bring out all the crazies,” said North.

North says there haven't been any major fights at The Bar during this year's Packers games. He says having an experienced security staff helps.

“We try to make sure they know to make their presence felt,” said North. “They are constantly walking around. They have the experience and know how to see when something is going to happen before it happens.”

North and safety officials say this season has been peaceful compared to past years.
