Wis. 'obituary burglar' enters 4 no-contest pleas

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) - A Sheboygan Falls man accused of using obituary notices to burglarize homes of the recently deceased has pleaded no contest to four theft-related charges.

A Sheboygan Press report says 62-year-old Dennis L. Petrie still faces another 38 charges.

He pleaded no contest Wednesday to felony theft of a firearm, two felony counts of armed burglary and misdemeanor criminal damage to property.

However, defense attorney Richard Hahn says he plans to appeal. He says items that were allegedly stolen and found in Petrie's home were seized illegally because investigators didn't have a warrant. But the judge said Petrie's wife gave police permission to search the property.

Prosecutors say the stolen goods often came from home where estate sales were being held or where family members were at a funeral.
