STURGEON BAY - Sheriff's officials have identified the people involved in the homicide investigation in Door County.
Deputies arrested Brian M. Cooper, 35, of Plainfield, Ill. The victim was Alisha N. Bromfield, 21, also of Plainfield, Ill.
Cooper was arrested at a Sister Bay business Sunday after investigators say he called the sheriff's department around noon to confess to killing his girlfriend at a resort in Nasewaupee.
Sheriff Terry Vogel says Cooper was arrested and taken to jail without incident at a business in Sister Bay.
Sister Bay is about 30 miles from the resort.
FOX 11’s Bill Miston spoke with Vogel Monday afternoon.
He said he would not go on camera, but did say the investigation into Bromfield’s murder is moving forward.
He says the autopsy on Bromfield has been completed, but the results are not yet being released.
He also confirmed that Bromfield’s body was found was at the Sand Bay Beach Resort & Suites in Nasewaupee.
At a press conference Sunday night, Vogel would not name the resort despite law enforcement vehicles and a State Crime Lab vehicle present at the resort.
Monday, the resort was quiet.
Owner Karyn Stroschein did not want to go on camera, but says the resort didn’t know there was an issue until police showed up Sunday.
She says some guests were slightly inconvenienced while investigators gathered evidence, but were eventually allowed back to their rooms.
Vogel would not say how long Bromfield and Cooper had been dating.
However, he characterized the relationship between the two as a “casual” boyfriend-girlfriend relationship.
Vogel says the investigation into this case isn’t any different from other cases the department has worked.
He says investigators are working to develop more background information about the suspect and victim.
He would not say which Illinois agencies are assisting in the case.
Vogel said Cooper and Bromfield attended a wedding Saturday night at the Log Den in Egg Harbor.
He says it's the first homicide in Door County in about 11 years.
Cooper is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. He has not been formally charged with any crime.
