TOWN OF CARLTON - We're taking a look back at the Kewaunee Power Station's history.
Its operating license was issued to Green Bay-based Wisconsin Public Service Corporation in 1973.
The plant, which could provide enough power for 140,000 homes, reached full power on July 23, 1974.
WPS and other utilities in the state and Minnesota announced the formation of Nuclear Management Company in 1999.
That conglomerate would oversee the power plant until Dominion Resources bought the plant in 2005 for $220 million.
The Richmond, Virginia company announced in 2011 it wanted to sell the facility.
That was the same year the plant's operating license was renewed.
So even though Dominion will close and decommission the plant, its license is valid until 2033.
