CARLTON, Wis. (AP) - Dominion Resources Inc. says it will proceed with plans to close and decommission its Kewaunee Power Station in northeastern Wisconsin.
The Richmond, Va.-based energy provider said Tuesday that the Midwest Independent System Operator determined the shutdown will not hurt the regional electrical grid.
The company announced plans last fall to close Kewaunee in the second quarter of 2013, after it was unable to find a buyer for the 556-megawatt nuclear power plant in Carlton.
Dominion CEO Thomas F. Farrell II says the employees of Kewaunee have been doing "an outstanding job," and the decision to close the plant "is in no way a reflection on them."
The plant will remain under the oversight of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission during the shutdown and decommissioning.
The plant has an estimated 400 employees.
