The owners of the SS Badger are seeking a change in its permit, in an effort to keep operating past next season.
Currently, the coal-fired ferry dumps 3.8 tons of ash into Lake Michigan each day during its trips between Manitowoc and Ludington, Michigan. However, the permit for that expires Dec. 19, 2012.
While Lake Michigan Car Ferry, Inc. continues to seek alternatives to coal - likely natural gas - the company wants to change from having a 'vessel general permit' to an 'individual national Permit Discharge Elimination System" permit, according to documents posted on the EPA's website.
The EPA has not said how long it will take to rule on the ferry company's permit request.
In a separate move, the company is also seeking landmark status from the federal government.
