S.S. Badger to start shipping season May 6

Still doesn't have an operating permit

MANTIOWOC - The S.S. Badger says it will start its shipping season May 6, even though it doesn't have an operating permit.

That's two weeks earlier than previously announced. The reason is so the S.S. Badger can transport wind tower sections to Michigan.

The coal-fired vessel dumps ash into Lake Michigan. Its permit to continue doing that expired in December.

The EPA is expected to announce a permit decision next month.
