Rey Moore, one of the men convicted of killing Tom Monfils, was denied parole Wednesday, according to a spokesman for the Dept. of Corrections.
For 15 years, Rey Moore has claimed he is innocent for the murder of former co-worker Tom Monfils. But his first parole hearing for early release was denied, and Brown County District Attorney John Zakowski said that claim of innocence will most likely keep Moore behind bars.
"Someone who is denying his involvement and not taking responsibility or showing remorse, I believe it makes it less likely that they're gonna be paroled their first time up," said Zakowski.
But Moore's attorney Byron Lichstein said he isn't getting discouraged.
"We are doing everything we can to help Rey," said Lichstein.
Moore appealed for a new trial in 2009, which was denied in January. Moore declined our request for an interview, but Lichstein said the fight isn't over.
"We believe strongly in his case and we're hopeful that eventually justice is gonna prevail," said Lichstein.
But Zakowski said justice did prevail in the conviction of Moore and the others.
"I think those people in the jury saw the case for what it was. They reached the right decision," said Zakowski.
Moore is eligible for parole again April first of next year. The Department of Corrections would not explain why parole was denied.
