Federal lawsuit still pending

MARINETTE - The city of Marinette has adopted a new ordinance governing political signs, months after a federal lawsuit was filed challenging the previous code.

City code formerly required a permit and $15 fee for political signs. A resident, Kristin Abbs, sued in federal court in October , arguing that ordinance infringed on her First Amendment rights. The city denied any wrongdoing .

Last week, the Marinette City Council passed a new ordinance that eliminates the fee and any reference to when the signs can be displayed, according to city clerk Jim Anderson. It went into effect Monday.

The federal court case is scheduled for a status conference Feb. 7. Abbs attorney, William McKinley, said a decision hasn't been made about the next step for the case.
