MARINETTE - A standoff lasting nearly three hours forced Marinette High School students to be evacuated Monday morning.
Marinette police say around 6:30 a.m., a person from Upper Michigan called them, concerned about posts a Marinette man had made on a social networking website. The 28-year-old man said he wanted to harm himself. He also mentioned a gun.
Officers went to 2000 Pierce Avenue to check on the man and found that he was on the second floor. They got in touch with him by telephone and kept him on the line throughout the incident.
Since the home was across the street from the high school, police decided to evacuate between 600 and 700 students to the University of Wisconsin-Marinette fieldhouse.
Around 9:20, the man agreed to come downstairs and surrender to police. He cooperated the whole time and there were no weapons found in areas he had access to. The man was then taken to Bay Area Medical Center. No charges are pending and police are treating the matter as a medical issue.
Students were back in school around 10 a.m.
