Michigan power plant to get $130M-$140M upgrade

MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) - Officials say a coal-fired power plant in Michigan's Upper Peninsula will get $130 million to $140 million in upgrades under plans by a power cooperative and a Wisconsin-based utility.

The announcement about the future of the Presque Isle Power Plant was made Tuesday in Marquette by Cadillac, Mich.-based Wolverine Power Cooperative, Milwaukee-based We Energies and Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder. Wolverine and We Energies plan to pursue joint ownership of the facility as well as upgraded emissions controls.

Wolverine plans to pay for and build the new air quality controls.

Last year, We Energies said the plant could be shut in 2017 or refitted to be fueled by natural gas as the company looked to comply with anticipated pollution regulations.

The joint venture and equipment will require state and federal approval.
