WAUSAUKEE - A woman is dead and a man is in the hospital with a gunshot wound.

Police are calling it murder and attempted suicide in Marinette County.

The shooting took place at the Citgo gas station on Main Street in Wausaukee, located in Marinette County. That's actually part of Highway 141.

The Marinette County Sheriff's Department says it responded quickly after they received the horrific call of shots being fired.

"They found a gentleman, approximately 55 years old, outside of the store with an apparent gunshot wound,” Sheriff Jerry Sauve described. “Inside the store we've got a woman deceased from an apparent gunshot wound."

Sauve says it appears the man walked into the Citgo. He then shot the 51-year-old woman behind the counter.

"It preliminarily looks like a homicide, attempted suicide,” said Sauve.

The alleged shooter was taken to a hospital in Marinette with what the sheriff describes as a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. Sauve says he may have been transferred to a hospital in Green Bay.

The sheriff says two other Citgo employees were in the store at the time. They were not hurt.

“They're shaken up. It's a terrible thing to see,” said Sauve.

The sheriff says he doesn't know the nature of the two people's past relationship. He says they may have lived together at one point. More information may be available on Monday.

Sauve says the public was not in danger. He did not release the names of the victim or the shooter.
