TOWN OF HOLLAND - Sheboygan County officials have suspended the water search and recovery effort for a missing Illinois girl in Lake Michigan.
The sheriff’s department said it would reconsider the efforts if new information is discovered. Crews are continuing to search the beach area.
Nine-year-old Sofia Khan was vacationing with her family in eastern Wisconsin when the girl drifted away from shore in a kayak Wednesday afternoon north of Cedar Grove. Authorities say she was not wearing a life jacket.
Sheboygan County sheriff's officials say the girl's father tried to swim out to the kayak, but strong winds pushed it farther and faster than he could swim.
Capt. David Adams says a man from a nearby cottage got into his canoe and paddled out to the kayak, but found it empty. The man's canoe capsized and he had to be rescued by Coast Guard personnel arriving at the scene.
Adams says the girl's family is from the Chicago area.
