APPLETON - Salvation Army bell-ringing will begin Friday in the Appleton area.

The Salvation Army-Fox Cities has set a goal of $1,180,000 for its Christmas campaign, which typically covers 59 percent of the group’s annual budget. The Christmas campaign includes donations at red kettles, by mail and general year-end contributions. Last year, the group exceeded its $1,016,000 goal by $78,884.

“We have seen a huge jump in those in need being served,” Maj. Jose Tamayo said in a news release. “We have had a flood of clients at both our food pantry and noon feeding program. Our financial assistance costs for our homeless prevention program have increased significantly.”

Salvation Army leaders say volunteers are still needed to ring bells. To sign up, visit safoxcities.org or call 955-1225. People can also set up virtual kettles to raise money online.

Bell-ringing is scheduled to end Dec. 24.
