A new health care bill introduced by House Democrats this week has many in Wisconsin talking.
The new measure in the House does contain a public option, something that both parties continue to disagree on. Democrats say it's a moderate push for the concept. Representative Steve Kagen said this bill strengthens Medicare, and levels the playing field with private insurance companies. He says it creates competition and keeps premiums low.
"This is an opportunity for consumers to push back against wall street run health insurance corporations,” said Rep. Kagen (D), 8th district. “We're changing the rules."
However, Republicans aren't buying that assessment. Some, like Representative Tom Petri, support an "opt-in" public option. He says this new bill is too expensive, and not good for Wisconsin.
"The cost estimates that were made by the speaker when she introduced the bill of some $864 billion cost over 10 years is really pushing the envelope," said Rep. Petri (R), 6th district.
Authors of the new House bill made small changes, hoping to get more votes. However, insiders say the debate has just begun. Some argue that a system is needed for those unable to find insurance elsewhere.
"I don't think that's fair that people that are still working hard that are low income don't get the same kind of options for people that work for big companies that have great healthcare," said Heather McLeod of Neenah.
Democrats in the Senate also introduced a bill this week. It allows states to opt out of the public option. Wisconsin Senator, Russ Feingold, says a public option is essential to bring the cost of insurance down. Deliberations should continue for weeks, so many changes are expected before any final vote takes place.
