FLORENCE - A 43-year-old Florence woman died after slipping on the ice at her home and being stranded outside Friday night.
The Florence County Sheriff's Department says the woman's ex-husband and 13-year-old son found her lying on stairs leading to the home's entrance around 9:30 Saturday morning. When rescuers arrived, she was semi-conscious and had suffered severe injuries to her hands, feet and legs because of exposure to the cold. She was flown to Aurora BayCare Hospital in Green Bay where she died Saturday afternoon.
An investigation found the woman slipped while walking home around 11:20 p.m. Friday. She crawled more than 300 feet along the side of the street to the side door of her home, but was overcome by the cold and could not get in.
Her ex-husband and two sons were inside the home and did not know she was outside.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in the area dipped to the single digits below zero early Saturday morning.
