Club helps women stay safe

APPLETON - With spring right around the corner and more people getting out, a local club wants to make sure women are safe.

The Fox Valley Grappling Club hosted free women's self-defense classes today.

Each session focused on assault prevention tactics and techniques.

Women learned how to defend against common chokes, grabs, bear hugs and fighting while on the ground or when confronted with a weapon.

"It's got be an ongoing process, where you get the knowledge again and again, because you're going to react how you train," said instructor Bill Krieg.

Krieg has been involved in martial arts for more than 15 years and is a certified law enforcement officer.
