Officials warn of identity theft scam

State officials are warning people to be on alert for identity theft scams.

The Attorney General's office says some Wisconsin residents have been contacted by a man identifying himself as "Officer Smith with the United Law Enforcement and Investigation Department.”

The caller provided a phone number and tried to get the person's Social Security Number and other information.

Officials want to remind everyone legitimate businesses and legal representatives do not ask for personal information over the phone or unsecured e-mail.
