GREEN BAY - The news came during third hour at Southwest High School.
"Principal Davis came over the loudspeaker and just told us the
really exciting news," said Student Body President Brock McMorran.
McMorran said the school is buzzing.
"Lots of people running around, everything is frantic in the offices and stuff," said McMorran.
Southwest students and staff say they're looking forward to the Commander in Chief's visit.
"To actually hear the words President Obama will be attending GBSW still seems a little odd-but we're very, in an exciting way, but we're very excited to have him," said Southwest High School Principal Bryan Davis.
"We're really pleased and proud to be the site and the host for President Obama's visit," Superintendent Dr. Greg Maass said.
School officials say they are working directly with the President's advance team and the Secret Service.
Davis says Obama will speak in the school gym. Seating will be available for about 1400 people.
Doors open at 9 a.m., the same time about 450 students will be taking final exams. So the school made some changes.
"We've reduced the exam hours-typically they're an hour and a half long-and we reduced them to an hour and that's really the only modification," said Davis.
Students we spoke with say they're not worried about any possible disruptions.
"I'm okay with it," said Southwest High School sophomore Jacob Krosnicki.
Southwest High School Officials say they were given a small allocation of tickets for students. There was a student lottery during the lunch period Monday, where students could apply for those tickets.
"We're actually going to say that our President was at our school," said Ryan Vollner.
Vollner is hoping for a ticket. Vollner and other students who want to see President Obama say they hope he will speak on topics like jobs, education and the economy.
"I would ask him to have more US jobs instead of foreign so our economy-it'll help boost our economy," said Krosnicki.
Other students will volunteer during the event. McMorran -for example- will welcome people who come to see Obama.
"We'll meet with a White House official on Wednesday evening to discuss crowd control stuff and what we need to be looking for-and what our actual roles will be in the whole event," said McMorran.
Southwest High School hopes to make a good first impression when President Obama arrives.
A Green Bay Public Schools custodial crew was working on the grounds outside the school today.
About 15 workers were on hand to spread mulch around the trees, cut the grass, and trim weeds around the school.
The custodial crew says it will be working through Wednesday on the landscaping project.
"Just to make the grounds more presentable, make it look nicer than it already is," said worker Mike Hemes.
The President is scheduled to arrive at Austin Straubel Airport around 11 a.m. His arrival is closed to the public.
Doors to the event at Southwest High School open at 9 a.m.
Final exams end at 9:40 and students and school staff must leave the building by 10:00. Students who need to be picked up must arrange a place off campus.
School officials are encouraging people who attend President Obama's town hall meeting to carpool.
Some parking is available at Southwest, but it is limited and based on order of arrival.
President Obama is expected to appear in the early afternoon
hours.
