OSHKOSH, Wis. - Two of 16-year-old Zachary Reid's friends took the stand at his
preliminary hearing in Winnebago County court today. The first,
Kayleigh Cayse, who says she met Reid after getting a phone call
from the teen asking for a ride.
"He said he killed him, and asked whether we could meet him
somewhere, and we said yes," said Kayleigh Cayse.
She said they met Reid at his apartment. Reid drove his
father's car and she and her friend followed behind. They
picked Reid up just down the road from Lakeview Elementary where
Reid parked his father's car with his father's body in the trunk.
Reid's friend Josh Johnson then took the stand, and described
a conversation he had with Reid in person after Reid allegedly
killed his father.
What did Zach tell you happened? "He killed him," said
Johnson. Did Zach tell you how? "Yes," said
Johnson. How? "Choking," said Johnson. What did
Zach Reid tell you regarding his plans for his father's body?
"Burn the body, put it in Red Granite," said Johnson.
Johnson also testified that Reid had told him that thoughts
of killing his father had crossed his mind before.
"I know he hated him," Johnson said.
Judge Scott Woldt believed there was enough evidence to hold
Reid over for trial. Reid's lawyer asked for a reverse waiver
hearing, which would allow Reid to be tried in juvenile
court. A hearing on that motion is scheduled for November
20th. If Reid is convicted in adult court he would be facing
life in prison. By Wisconsin law all murder cases involving
juveniles start in adult court.
