OSHKOSH - After four hours of deliberation jury members failed to reach a verdict Thursday in the fate of Neenah teen Zach Reid, who is accused of killing his father.
Earlier in the day, dueling arguments filled the Winnebago County courtroom where Reid sat stoic and unmoving.
"Punch it in, laugh as he fights for air, when he's on the ground just leave him lying there," District Attorney Christian Gossett said, reading a note to jurors written by Zach Reid.
Prosecutors described the teen as a bully who intimidated his weak 103 pound father, Brett Reid.
Prosecutors say Reid snapped when his father told him to stay home for the night.
"Now, Zach can't do what Zach wants to do," Gossett said during closing arguments. "Dad is a horrible inconvenience at this point, that's why dad's dead. That's why Brett Reid is dead right now."
The defense however, claims Brett Reid was abusive, a frequent drinker who threatened his son many times.
"We have a son who felt he had to take the life of the person who brought him into this world because of the circumstances that night," Reid's attorney Kevin Musolf said.
Musolf says Brett Reid was drunk and trying to stab Reid in the chest. He says Zach wanted to make his father pass out, but killed him instead.
"It was the same consistent thing, the same thing over and over again," Musolf told the jury in closing arguments. "I did it in self-defense, he had a knife on me. Those were consistent. The state did nothing to disprove it."
Jury members will be back to continue deliberation Friday morning at 8:30.
