OSHKOSH - The mood was tense around 2 p.m. in Judge Scott Woldt's courtroom as Zach Reid and his family members got ready to hear the jury's verdict after four days of testimony and nine hours of deliberation.
"We the jury find the defendant Zachary Reid guilty of first degree intentional homicide," read Judge Woldt.
Reid sat still as the verdict was read; his lawyer equally stunned.
"Very surprised, very surprised," said Reid's attorney Kevin Musolf. "Zach was in shock."
His mother was in tears, collapsing to the floor minutes later outside the courtroom.
"How's the family doing right now?"
"Not well," said Musolf. "They're in shock."
Reid's attorney says he's disappointed in the jury's decision.
"They disregarded the self defense, didn't believe the self defense, and I just think that's wrong," said Musolf. "I think the evidence showed there was imminent danger and that he acted in self defense so I'm very surprised with the verdict."
"Obviously we're very happy with the verdict," said Winnebago County District Attorney Christian Gossett. "We think the jury got it right."
The district attorney says the self defense story just didn't add up.
"It just didn't make any sense," said Gossett. "If you're actually being threatened by someone who has a knife you call police. To claim there were 20 prior incidents with knives and one with a shotgun was absolutely incredible to me that you would never call police."
A few of the jurors were emotional after the verdict was read.
One was crying as she walked out. Reid's attorney says he plans to
appeal the decision after sentencing in August.
