OSHKOSH - It was an emotional sentencing for both sides as 24-year-old Sandra Scott received 25 years in prison and 10 years extended supervision, with the victim's family hoping for a maximum sentence.
"I believe she deserves to sit for the rest of her life in jail for what she did," said Alizay's mother Kimberly Koepf.
"I ask the court to show no mercy for Sandra Scott," said Alizay's grandmother Judy Kline. "I ask the court to sentence this evil person to 40 years without the possibility of parole."
Scott was convicted this past October of punching and killing two-year-old Alizay Keopf in January 2007 because the girl didn't want to fold up a blanket.
"You punched Alizay in the stomach not once, but twice," said Winnebago County judge Karen Seifert.
Scott was babysitting the toddler at the time. During Thursday's sentencing Scott asked Alizay's family for forgiveness.
"I just want to say to Kim I'm sorry," said Sandra Scott. "And you know I am, and how much I loved her, we both did. And I just pray that you forgive me. I never meant for her to die."
Scott's attorney says he doesn't object to the sentence.
"I think the sentence was fair," said Gary Schmidt, Scott's attorney. "I didn't feel there was any strong aggravating factors to go to the maximum prison confinement."
The victim's family declined comment after the hearing. Scott will fulfill her sentence at Taycheedah Correctional Institution.
Scott's attorney says there has been discussion about filing an appeal, though, no decision has been made.
