A proposal from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay was one of 18 selected to receive up to $70,000 from NASA, the agency announced.

The grants are part of the Ralph Steckler Space Grant Colonization Research and Technology Development Opportunity. NASA officials said the grant money would support university research and development activities that support a sustained human presence in space, increasing understanding of the moon’s environment and develop basic infrastructure for future space colonies.

After a nine-month first phase, the top four proposals are in line for grants of up to $250,000 in a second phase. After that, the top two are eligible for up to $275,000 in grants.

No details were released on the universities’ grants.
