DETROIT (AP) - Pope Benedict XVI has named Bishop Allen Henry Vigneron as the new archbishop of Detroit.

The 60-year-old Michigan-born Vigneron, who has been serving in California, replaces Cardinal Adam Maida, former bishop in the Green Bay Catholic Diocese.

Maida submitted his resignation in 2005 when he turned 75 as required by church law, but the pope had invited him to continue. Maida's resignation now has been accepted.

Vigneron was an auxiliary bishop for the Detroit archdiocese before being named bishop of Oakland, Calif., in 2003.

He will lead the 1.4 million-member Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit.

Maida is to introduce Vigneron at a news conference Monday morning in Detroit. His installation has been scheduled for Jan. 28.

Maida was bishop of Green Bay from 1984-1990.
