GREEN BAY - The 34-year old woman who pretended to be a high school student was committed to a mental health facility on Tuesday.
Wendy Brown assumed her teenaged daughter's identity in August, and attended one day of classes at Ashwaubenon High School. Brown also practiced with the cheerleading team.
"I'm not a bad person. I just made a mistake," Brown said tearfully.
Brown tried to make amends for pretending to be someone she was not--a teenager at Ashwaubenon High School, a cheerleader, and even a landlord who collected rent.
"I'm really sorry for what I've done, and I realize what I did and I feel bad about it. I regret it. I'm not a bad person. I just made a mistake," said Brown.
It all fell apart for Brown in August. She began to miss classes and was reported truant. It turned out she was in jail.
Brown had been arrested for a different scheme - impersonating a landlord, collecting almost $800 in rent.
"Mrs. Brown has a long standing history of significant and serious emotional problems," said Brown County Judge Sue Bischel.
Prosecutors say Brown was trying to relive her high school experience at Ashwaubenon because she never got to graduate high school. However, the same prosecutors say since being arrested, Brown has received her GED.
Now Brown will spend up to 3 years at the Winnebago Mental Health Institute , where she will get extensive counseling and medication.
Brown's husband and attorney had no comment after court. The prosecutor told FOX 11 he is happy with the sentence.
