However, decline is slowing

American auto makers as a whole are still having a tough time making their goals. They are simply trying to turn around the steepest sales decline in decades.

If we take a closer look tonight, we'll see how this past month compared to a year ago. We're looking at June of '09 versus June of '08.

And it's clear that sales are still dropping. If there's any silver lining it is that the year-to-year drops have been well over 40 percent for several months. So, overall the drop -- averaging 28 percent -- is less.

Chrysler is just out of bankruptcy and a sale. G-M just went into bankruptcy. Both got billions of taxpayer bailout dollars. Ford never asked and seems closer to turning the slump around.

G-M still sold the most vehicles -- actually more sales than the month before. However, considering the Big Three used to dominant car sales to Americans, these figures in June added up to less than half of all U-S sales.
