ASHWAUBENON - Four people are dead after a crash early Friday morning on Highway 41.
It happened near the Lombardi Avenue exit around 1 a.m. Friday. The Brown County Sheriff's Department said a man was driving a Jeep Liberty in the wrong direction in the southbound lanes of Highway 41 near Lombardi Avenue when he crashed into a Chrysler Concord with three people inside.
The driver of the Jeep, 53-year-old Stephen Siebert of Ashwaubenon, died at the scene. Two people in the car were also killed instantly: the driver, 20-year-old Paige Riley of Appleton, and 17-year-old Arielle Lewandowski of Menasha, who was riding in the front seat. 19-year-old Samuel Goudy of Neenah, who was riding in a back seat of the car, died Friday afternoon at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay.
Authorities said Siebert was likely drunk when he headed in the wrong direction. His car slammed through a fence near Ridge Rd. and went up an embankment to get on the highway. Police said Siebert stopped in the median for a moment before turning right and heading north in the southbound lane.
"This was horrendous," Capt. Randy Schultz, with the Brown County Sheriff's Department, said of the crash. "Our heartfelt sympathies to the families. I guess the only good news I can present to them at this time is that their loved ones did not suffer," Schultz said.
Siebert also died at the scene. Internet court records show that he had no prior arrests, although police suspect he had been drinking before the crash.
"Right now, I would say alcohol is a causal factor and I'll leave it at that," Schultz added.
Arielle Lewandowski graduated from Menasha High School earlier this month. Officials said she was involved with the school's choir and theater programs. Paige Riley also attended Menasha High School but, most recently, was home schooled.
Authorities said they are still trying to piece together where
Siebert was before the crash.
