CASCO - Now standing in front of the Casco Village Hall is a symbol of the sacrifices made by those who have served, fought for, and in some cases died for their country. A granite veterans memorial was installed a few weeks ago and will be dedicated on Saturday. It is a reminder not lost on the small community.
That's because Luxemburg-Casco has had to bury three of its own in recent years. Marines Jessy Thiry, Luke Zimmerman, and Dean Opicka all died while fighting in Iraq.
"For it to hit home in a small town like this, it really brings the community together," Marine Corps Sgt. Darren Opicka said. His brother, Dean, was killed in April 2008.
Community members said a memorial was long overdue. But when the community lost its third young man in the war, Casco's American Legion Post 319 decided something needed to be done.
Last year, the town held its first 4th of July parade in more than 20 years. In the end, more than $50,000 was raised -- enough money to build the memorial.
Legion Post Commander, Vince LeGreve, said the loss of the three local Marines was the inspiration for doing something for veterans, but that the memorial honors all who have served the country.
"More than anything else is the veterans, the living veterans, that have pain, ache that they'll never forget. When they come and see this, I hope it's a thank you for Casco," LeGreve said.
Darren Opicka said his family feels honored.
"it's for everybody that we've lost over the years -- wherever we've went to war to preserve our freedom. To dedicate it to my brother and everyone we've lost, it's amazing. I can't believe they've done this," Opicka said.
Kewaunee County's oldest surviving World War Two veteran, 92-year-old Elmer Prodell, said he's impressed.
"I think its one of the greatest things they did, our American Legion, is put that memorial up for all Kewaunee County. I think its very nice," Prodell said.
The memorial will be dedicated Saturday afternoon, following a parade in Casco that starts at noon.
