MARINETTE - It's been one year since Eric Volp was last seen alive, leaving an Iron Mountain bar alone. His body was eventually discovered months later, submerged in a creek nearly 25 miles from his home.
"The challenge in this case is where did it happen? That's what we are working on," said Jerry Sauve, the chief deputy for the Marinette County Sheriff's Department.
Sauve said the Marinette County Sheriff's Department is working with the Iron Mountain Police department on the investigation. That's because Volp went missing in Michigan and was found in Wisconsin.
Volp's body was found in the K.C. Creek in the Town of Dunbar in July. At the time, his friends and family said they were hopeful the discovery would lead to a break in the case.
"Hopefully we can find out how this all happened and who was involved," Michael Wenz, one of Volp's friends, told FOX 11 in July.
"I suspected foul play because he's not the type of person that would just go missing," Wenz added.
Investigators are not revealing how Volp died but they say his body was badly decomposed and showed signs of significant trauma. They were able to identify the 28-year-old through dental records and a distinctive tattoo.
"We are spending a lot of man hours on this. It is fluid, it is active. We are interviewing and re-interviewing people. Polygraph examinations have been given," said Sauve.
So far, no arrests have been made but Sauve says finding whoever is responsible is a priority.
"It's at the top of our list," he said.
