Concern about the swine flu is spreading faster than the virus itself, with local health officials working to educate the public.
"People all have a role and they can do something to help themselves as well," said Judy Friederichs, Brown County Health Director.
So far in Brown County there are no confirmed cases of the swine flu, but health officials expect the number of suspected cases to rise as people develop and come forward with flu-like symptoms.
"There's more that will go to their physician to sort out their concerns," said Friederichs.
City and county officials have been meeting and say they have plans in place to deal with a major spread of the virus if it happens.
And they are encouraging businesses to get prepared as a precaution too.
"Business tends to be the front line for the public," explained Cheryl Dietrick, executive director of the De Pere Chamber of Commerce.
Dietrick sent out email reminders to hundreds of businesses to pull out their emergency preparedness plans.
"Do you have enough, soap, disposable towels and gels for your employees," listed Dietrick.
Big gatherings are expected this weekend at area churches so the state is sending out an advisory to churches and faith based groups not to use a shared cup for communion--just as a precaution to avoid the spread of germs.
"With the circumstances we have now and not knowing what this novel flu strain is going to do our recommendation would be to go to the single use cups," said Mary Dorn, De Pere Health Department Director.
To help fend off the swine flu and other viruses health officials recommend frequent hand washing, stay home if your sick, avoid touching your eyes and face, keep a six feet distance from any suspected cases and cover your cough and sneeze.
As residents take precautions, local officials say they are ready for the worst.
"I think we're prepared to handle a coordinated event if it would happen," said Cullen Peltier, Brown County Emergency Management Director.
Health officials point out though this is a time to prepare, not to panic.
