JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) - Janesville firefighters rescued eight people from balconies during an apartment fire. Seven people were treated at a local hospital for smoke inhalation.
Officials say firefighters were called to a 12-unit apartment building about 2:20 a.m. Thursday and found heavy smoke coming from one of the apartments.
WISC-TV reports officials say the fire apparently started in the basement of the building and that a broken water line slowed its progress. The cause is under investigation. Damage is estimated at $100,000 to $150,000.
The Red Cross is assisting 11 adults and five children.
