MARSHFIELD, Wis. (AP) - Hundreds of people came to offer condolences to the family of a fallen Marshfield soldier.
They stood in a line that wrapped around the Columbus Catholic High School gym Thursday evening in Marshfield. Army Staff Sgt. Joe Altmann was killed Christmas Day during an insurgent attack in Kunar Province, Afghanistan. A funeral service for the 27-year-old medic will be held Friday morning.
The Marshfield News-Herald says the Marine Corps League presented Altmann's widow, Nikki, with a bronze Fallen Warrior sculpture. The soldier's military medals, photos, sympathy cards and flowers were displayed during the visitation.
American Legion Post 54 members stood guard near Altmann's flag-draped casket. Patriot Guard Riders held flags lining the entrance to the high school.
