Legislature to consider another raw milk bill

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The state Legislature is expected to consider another bill legalizing the sale of unpasteurized milk in Wisconsin, legislation that could have Gov. Scott Walker's support if it contains safeguards for consumers' health.

Republican Sen. Glenn Grothman says he plans to introduce the legislation in the next few weeks. State law currently prohibits the sale of raw milk to the public. Opponents of the law say consumers should be able to decide for themselves if they want it. Raw milk supporters say it contains nutrients that are destroyed during pasteurization.

Grothman introduced a similar bill in 2011 that died in committee. Walker spokesman Cullen Werwie tells the Journal Sentinel the governor would sign a bill to allow the limited sale of raw milk if it contained the health protections.
