Wis. DNR warns sand mine might kill moths

MADISON (AP) - State wildlife officials say a mining project in western Wisconsin could kill a small number of endangered moths.

Unimin Corporation wants to mine sand from a site near Tunnel City in Monroe County. Department of Natural Resources officials say a small part of the site is a potential habitat for the phlox moth.

The DNR says the company plans to preserve and enhance the potential moth habitat on a portion of the site. The agency says the mine likely won't affect the moth's overall recovery prospects in Wisconsin and has proposed giving the company an incidental take permit.

The public can comment on the proposed permit through Feb. 19.
