VILLAGE OF FRIESLAND - A Wisconsin family got quite the surprise when they spotted a black bear in their backyard.

The DeYoung family lives just north of the village of Friesland in Columbia County. They say the animal ate seeds, eggs and bones they had left outside.

The family says they were surprised to see the bear come so close.

"I heard the 'woof, woof, woof' and I saw a black streak go right on through the woods," said Art DeYoung, who ended up confronting the animal face-to-face when it stood up against their screen door. "After 50 years I've never seen a bear here before."

The DNR says they've seen more black bears move into the southern part of the state in the last few years.

If you encounter a black bear, the DNR recommends making noise until it walks away. They also say to keep food and garbage out of a bear's reach.
