MADISON, Wis. (AP) - State Capitol Police Chief Charles Tubbs has resigned to take a job as Dane County's new emergency management director.
Tubbs was responsible for security at the Capitol during last year's protests over Gov. Scott Walker's law stripping public workers of their union rights. Thousands of people occupied the Capitol around the clock for three weeks straight. There were no major incidents. Tubbs spent hours during the protests' waning days negotiating with demonstrators who refused to leave rather than arresting them.
Dane County Executive Joe Parisi issued a statement Tuesday saying he had picked Tubbs to fill the emergency management position. Parisi, who served in the Legislature during the protests, says Tubbs knows how to keep people safe.
Tubbs will start his new job June 4.
