APPLETON - The DNR wants to remind hunters to donate unwanted venison to those in need.
Meat processors like "Cedar Creek meats" in Appleton say they will accept donated deer meat.
Hunters are asked to drop the animals off within 24 hours.
Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch visited the shop Friday to encourage hunters to participate.
"The state of Wisconsin will test that deer and then will assure that a food pantry or a needy family actually will receive the meat. It's all turned into burger and it's incredibly nutritious," said Kleefisch.
During the past 17 years, the "Hunt for the Hungry" program has collected more than 680 tons of venison for needy families.
