MADISON - Recall petition signatures dated with just the last two digits of the year are valid, according to a Government Accountability Board correction released Monday.
On Sunday, GAB spokesman Reid Magney told FOX 11 signatures dated with only the last two digits of the year were invalid. However, on Monday, Magney said he was mistaken and that there is no rule requiring all four digits of the year.
"On a regular nomination petition, you can have the day and the month only," Magney said. "But on a recall petition, you need to have the day, the date and the year. I made the mistake - and I don't know how I twisted things up in my head - that you needed four digits in the year instead of two. That was my mistake and I take responsibility for that."
"I apologize if that caused you problems or created confusion in the community," Magney continued.
The GAB, the agency which oversees elections in Wisconsin, is in the process of verifying more than a million signatures seeking to recall Gov. Scott Walker, Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and four Republican state senators.
Copies of petitions against the senators have been posted online. Magney says copies of the petitions against Walker will not be posted online Monday. GAB staff is evaluating privacy concerns. Copies of the petitions against Kleefisch are expected to be posted online sometime this week.
