Police impersonator report in Superior was false

SUPERIOR, Wis. (AP) - Superior police say a report of a man impersonating a police officer last month turned out to be false.

A 911 caller on Jan. 14 reported being approached by a man claiming to be a member of the Superior Police Department. The caller reported being allowed to leave after providing vehicle registration and proof of insurance.

Police quickly determined that no law enforcement agency was involved in the alleged traffic stop, so the incident was classified as someone impersonating an officer. But police said Wednesday that video surveillance footage shows no such traffic stop ever happened.

Police say it's a crime in Wisconsin to provide false information to police. The case has been referred to the Douglas County district attorney's office for possible charges.
