WASHINGTON (AP) - Public filings and reports show former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson has earned more than $8.5 million in compensation since he left public office in 2005.
The private sector work of the former Health and Human Services secretary is getting attention as Thompson mounts a U.S. Senate bid.
American Bridge 21st Century, a Democratic political group that researches Republican candidates and proposals, provided documentation of all of Thompson's publicly disclosed earnings to The Associated Press. They were then reviewed and independently verified.
The documents show Thompson pulled in large salaries from a Washington, D.C., law firm with a large lobbying practice, a global consulting firm and healthcare firms among others.
Thompson spokesman Darrin Schmitz says the former governor has never been a lobbyist, and is focusing on his campaign.
