Special court for veterans to begin in Nov.

Kenosha, Racine and Walworth counties

RACINE, Wis. (AP) - Some military veterans who face criminal charges in Kenosha, Racine and Walworth counties could be tried in a new treatment court geared specifically toward veterans.

The Veterans Treatment Court is designed to hold veterans accountable for criminal acts. But it's also intended to include opportunities for substance-abuse and mental health treatment. It will also introduce veterans to federal benefits and services they might not have known about.

A Journal Times of Racine report says the first session will be Nov. 14 in Racine. Court administrators are reaching out to prosecutors in the three counties, asking that staffers identify defendants who might be eligible.

To qualify, veterans must have a diagnosable mental health condition or an issue with drug or alcohol abuse.
