Eau Claire police defend street cameras

EAU CLAIRE (AP) - Eau Clarie's police chief says putting surveillance cameras on some city streets would help deter crime. But opponents don't like the thought of constantly being watched.

Chief Jerry Matysik says the cameras could be tried on Water St., where officers are frequently called because of the number of bars. Matysik says having cameras in plain view could stop some disorderly conduct and fights.

The chief says he realizes some people will find the surveillance cameras intrusive, but he says there's no expectation of privacy on public streets.

Jack Gribble works at Midwest Tattoo on Water St. He doesn't like the idea of someone watching him all the time.

The estimated cost of the cameras is $60,000. Matysik wants them installed by 2011.
