UW-Platteville's "M" marks 75 years

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (AP) - A symbol of the mining tradition of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville marks its 75th anniversary this year.
    
It's the world's largest "M," located on the Platte Mound four miles northeast of the city of Platteville. It's 241 feet high and 214 feet wide.
    
It's the official symbol for the "Miners" of the Wisconsin Institute of Technology, formerly the Wisconsin Mining School and currently the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
    
It can be seen from points in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin.
    
The total area of the "M'' exceeds one acre and is approximately 24,000 square feet in area.
