Wis. concealed carry rules expire next week

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The state Justice Department is preparing to enact a second round of emergency rules enabling the agency to issue concealed carry permits.

The agency put emergency rules in place last year for issuing and revoking permits. The regulations are set to expire Dec. 15.

The agency has drafted permanent regulations. The package needs Assembly and Senate approval, though, and neither house has acted on it. Legislative leaders say they'll address the rules after the new session begins in January.

DOJ officials say they plan to implement a fresh set of emergency rules Dec. 15. Those regulations don't require legislative approval and will be identical to the ones currently in place.

The agency had issued 143,081 permits as of Nov. 25.
