MILWAUKEE (AP) - Wisconsin is receiving nearly $1.5 million in federal funds to help upgrade the state's automated system for paying unemployment insurance.

The money is coming from the U.S. Department of Labor. It's part of a $191 million program to help states increase their efficiency and cut down on mistakes in their unemployment payments.

The grants are intended to fund three efforts: reducing mistakes, modernizing technology and designing tools to help detect and recover improper payments.

Labor Secretary Hilda Solis says the grants will help reduce government waste, fraud and abuse. She says the government has an obligation to be responsible with taxpayer money, and the funds will help make sure that unemployment-insurance programs have integrity and run efficiently.
